Utilizing Social Media in your Job Search

I have been invited to be part of the Employers Panel for a discussion forum at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. This Post is a compilation of the materials I will be sharing with the Goucher Seniors. I will also be providing a link to this blog for the students who request soft copies of the materials.

I am saving this in the “Career / Jobseeker advice” Category and hope it is helpful for others who visit this Blog.

Here is the document: Miscellaneous Jobseeker Helps:

Everyone knows that the best way to get a job is to leverage your network. And almost everyone knows that social media is a great way to build your network.

But many of you are making lots of social media mistakes. I know because so many people tell me that social media is a waste of their time. They’re wasting their time, and continuing to make mistakes, because there’s a set of common lies that people believe about social media. Here are those lies:

Job search advice for the unemployed

Maybe because it’s a New Year, or maybe because the recession and unemployment just won’t go away, but lately I have been getting an increase of emails and links to articles about unemployment, or offering advice for jobseekers. This post will offer links to some of the information I consider useful or valuable.

As with every topic, there are many differing opinions. One email I received today was from a well-known and respected HR source. The article offered resume and cover letter advice, and was well written. There were, however, poignant comments from two individuals caught in the middle of their own job searches. Both took offense to the suggestions, complaining of ever-changing standards for resumes and cover letters, and inconsistencies among Recruiters and HR Personnel who review resumes and do the initial candidate screening.

Another email I received linked to a New York Times article putting their “spin” on the recession and the unemployment rate. (hard to say if it was ‘news’ or opinion’) While they did mention the “under-employment” figures, and those who may have given up searching, they still tried to sell the idea that the Federal Government’s concept of throwing money at the problem is the solution we need. This money will, of course, go to new job creation. (Let’s hope so!)

If you are one of the unemployed, or under-employed, don’t give up the search. There are jobs out there, and engaging in an active search and participating in phone and personal interviews just might open up the right opportunity for you. Sitting back and waiting for a new job to be created just for you, or disengaging from the process will lessen your chances greatly of finding your next job. I am not glossing over the trauma of a job loss, and the discouragement that comes from consistent “No’s” in response to your resumé, or as feedback from an interview. I am advocating that you keep up the search and work through the “No’s” and the “No offer’s”. The job search and the interview process can add to your “employability” in the eyes of the hiring manager.

Here are links to resources you may find helpful as you draft or update your resumé, write cover letters, and prepare for interviews:

http://susanireland.com/ - Susan offers Great resources from Resume writing to Career advice, etc., etc, etc. This may be the only website you need to visit for job search tips and advice!

http://dolchallenge.ideascale.com/ - The Department of Labor has joined with the “Tools for America’s Jobseekers Challenge”. This site is turning out to be a great source of information compiled from the nations leading HR and Recruitment Specialists, and includes links recommended by other jobseekers.

http://www.workcoachcafe.com/ - Another great site for Jobseekers with easy to read articles and timely advice from “Ronnie Ann”, admittedly not an expert Career Coach, but she has written some excellent Posts and offers links to helpful resources.

Simple Interviewing Tips

I connected with Byron Kalies today on Twitter. http://twitter.com/byronlk

Byron is a Writer, a Golfer, and a Golf Writer :-) , and has written a few Blog Posts on Interviewing.

I found this one to be short and to the point, and very poignant:

http://byronkalies.com/wp/2009/04/2-short-articles-on-interviewing/

2 short articles on interviewing

1. Interviewing – First Love

“Not surprisingly, interview specialists have found it extraordinarily difficult to persuade most employers to adopt the structured interview. It just doesn’t feel right. For most of us, hiring someone is essentially a romantic process, in which the job interview functions as a desexualized version of a date. We are looking for someone with whom we have certain chemistry, even if the coupling that results ends in tears and the pursuer and the pursued turn out to have nothing in common. We want the unlimited promise of a love affair. The structured interview, by contrast, seems to offer only the dry logic and practicality of an arranged marriage. “ – Malcolm Gladwell (‘The New-Boy Network’)

*****

2. Interviewing – First Contact

Log on to the internet and google “interview” and “first impressions” and you will come up with over a million matches. The vast, vast, vast majority of the results are practically identical. To save time I’ll précis this information for you;

“Turn up at the right address, on time. Wear clothes. Don’t be late. Bring a firm handshake. Don’t kill any of the interviewers and smile.”

Paradoxically when interviewers are being trained there is almost as much advice telling them to ignore first impressions. It goes by a range of names; self-fulfilling prophecy, stereotyping, horns and halo effect (of which more later), interview-enhancing behaviour, etc. yet they all amount to more or less the same thing. This is the basic advice that has been handed down by interviewer trainer to interview consultant to interviewing facilitator from generation to generation and pretty much consists of the following;

Research indicates that interviewers decide which interviewee will get the job within the first X minutes and then spend the rest of the interview confirming their initial analysis; i.e. if they like the candidate they ask easy questions and treat the responses more favourably. Or, if they take a dislike to the candidate they will ask difficult questions and look less favourably on their answers. As interviewers you must fight against this, and remain totally objective.

(The value of X is any possible single integer – depending on age, laziness, of trainer.)

TEKrecruiter / Social Recruiter / BaltoTechJobs

This Blog has some history to it, and rather than let it fizzle or fade due to lack of attention, my goal is to bring it back to life and offer it to a serious minded Baltimore-based Recruiter who would like to dedicate the time and effort to post local Baltimore Jobs and provide advice and assistance to Jobseekers.

The Blog started as TEKrecruiter, then became Social Recruiter (for obvious reasons to those in the know).

It can easily be renamed TEKrecruiter for the discerning buyer. Or – “Social Recruiter” does have great marketing power as a name, and with the future of all things Social, it could become a Blog specialized for those Jobseekers and Employers.

I own the Domain names: www.TEKrecruiter.com and www.BaltoTechJobs.com and have built up a great Following on Twitter with @BaltoTechJobs. I have also recently added a new Twitter Profile @TEK_Recruiter. (Someone is using @TEKrecruiter, although not very much – it may be available in the future)

www.SocialRecruiter.com is not currently available as a Domain Name.

I will be Tweeting about this Blog and the Domain Names and the possibility for a combined sale to the right person. (Training is also available)

If you have interest in establishing a Technical Recruiting presence in Baltimore, or if you would like to add another element of “style” to your current Recruiting efforts, and gain a good entry into Social Media Recruiting, contact me directly and state your interest:

Trying to bring this TEKrecruiter Blog back to life

This was one of my first “Profiles” online using Social Media. At the time I was an I.T. Recruiter for a TEK company and before the Employer got too particular about what Recruiters could or could not do online, I grabbed the URL and started a Blog. I was also known on LinkedIn as www.LinkedIn.com/in/TEKrecruiter, but have since changed that back to /harveyclay
I actually did pretty well getting the name “TEKrecruiter” on the first page of Google searches, and was posting Job openings on the blog and Tweeting about the postings.
I no longer work for that same TEK Recruiting firm, but there is such a demand for good information for jobseekers, I hope to bring TEKrecruiter back to life, and then turn it over to someone who will work it and do it justice.

Stay tuned……
